Antu Kareem: The Actor-Turned-Entrepreneur Shaping Bangladesh’s Business Landscape
From captivating audiences on screen to making his mark in the business world, Antu Kareem has seamlessly blended creativity with entrepreneurship. While many recognize him as a seasoned actor, model, and producer, few are aware of his remarkable journey as a business leader who introduced international brands of stationery and baby care products to Bangladesh.
However, the path to success was far from easy. Family expectations weighed heavily, with pressure to secure stable jobs or sit for the BCS examinations. When they sought capital from their families, two of Antu’s friends left the venture. Undeterred, he continued his pursuit, discovering a significant gap in the Bangladeshi market for high-quality pens. Having used premium pens during his time in India, Antu saw an opportunity to introduce renowned brands like Cello and Montex to Bangladesh.
To kickstart this venture, Antu and his team traveled to Kolkata’s Boro Bazar, purchasing pens from traders and reselling them in Dhaka’s Chawkbazar. The demand was overwhelming, but they soon realized that informal imports were unsustainable. A businessman from Kolkata advised them to open a Letter of Credit (LC) to facilitate large-scale imports. This, however, posed another challenge: Antu and his partners had no experience in international trade or LC procedures. Fortunately, a bank official guided them through the process, though securing the necessary capital proved difficult. Once again, two partners withdrew, but Antu remained steadfast, borrowing funds from a friend’s father under specific conditions.
With newfound knowledge, Antu and his team contacted 15 foreign companies, eventually securing a meeting with Lexi, a major pen manufacturer. This breakthrough solidified their reputation, and Pentagon International Limited quickly established itself as a leading importer of stationery. However, as the market grew competitive, with numerous firms entering the sector, Antu pivoted his business strategy.
By 2007, Pentagon had expanded its network and shifted focus to baby care products. After two years of research, they partnered with Japan’s Lion Corporation in 2009, securing the rights to import Kodomo brand baby care items. Today, these products are distributed across Bangladesh, reinforcing Pentagon’s position in the market.
The company’s growth has been nothing short of impressive. Pentagon International Limited now employs 300 individuals, ensuring seamless nationwide distribution. Furthermore, they have acquired land in an industrial zone and are preparing to manufacture products domestically. Soon, Lion’s baby care items will be produced in Bangladesh, reducing dependency on imports and fostering local industry.
Beyond stationery and baby care, Pentagon is diversifying its portfolio by investing in jute-based products. With a vision to export Bangladesh’s homegrown jute items worldwide, Antu aims to contribute to the nation’s economic development while promoting sustainable materials.
Despite his entrepreneurial success, Antu has never strayed from his artistic roots. His work in television dramas, music videos, and films has earned him widespread recognition. His music video “Ek Jibon” remains one of his most celebrated projects, and he has since starred in over 15 music videos and 50 television dramas. Additionally, he has ventured into production, with notable projects including the film Common Gender (2008), which addressed social issues in Bangladesh.
Looking ahead, Antu is preparing to produce a children’s film while continuing to expand his business empire. His dedication to ethical entrepreneurship is evident in his commitment to employee welfare. During the COVID-19 pandemic, not a single employee was laid off—a testament to his leadership and compassion.
With an ambitious goal of increasing his workforce to 2,000 within the next two years, Antu Kareem is not just an actor or a businessman—he is an inspiration. His journey reflects resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to innovation, making him a true pioneer in Bangladesh’s business landscape.
